This week has been a terrific week of instruction and making of new friends! This year I functioned as the cook for the crew and worked my normal job for liveBooks. The students did a terrific job with their photo stories and each person took away a little something different from the workshop. Eric Laurits was the staff photographer and did a fantastic job of documenting the learning process.

Here are a few images from the week at Roots Workshop:

* Catherine and Greg

Laudholm Farm Wedding

photographer: J
venue: Laudholm Farm Wells, ME
officiant: Bob Berkebile
caterer: Kitchen Chicks Catering
florist: Calluna Fine Flowers Ogunquit, ME
cake: Let Them Eat Cake Kennebunk, ME
hair/make-up: Freedom Salon York, ME
gown: Ella Couture Montreal

J spent his 4th at one of our favorite venues, Laudholm Farm, set among rolling hills of Wells, Maine. Typical of our season so far, ominous weather rolled in just an hour before the scheduled ceremony with rain- and hail! A quick decision was made to have the ceremony in the barn and guests were happy to be indoors, and even happier when it cleared for a beautiful afternoon.

Catherine, who met Greg through work connections at Harvard, recently moved from Montreal to Maine. Her family all spoke French, so an interpreter was on hand for both the ceremony and toasts at dinner, providing many laughs throughout the evening. The day ended where it began, with a bit of dancing in the barn.

On to the images…

From gray to bright blue skies. As they say in Maine, if you don’t like the weather wait 20 minutes.

The bridal party gathers before the ceremony.

Dramatic ceremony scene inside the old barn with twinkle lights.

Greg and Catherine.

The light at Laudholm is magical during any part of the day.

Adore this image of Catherine’s son running ahead of them in the field just before sunset.

Sweet reaction to toasts at dinner under the tent.

Awaiting the cake cutting. Priceless.

See more of their imagery in the album design below.

Felicitations, Catherine et Greg! Je vous souhaite de faire un beau mariage et d’avoir une vie à deux pleine de bonheur, et bien sûr une lune de miel merveilleuse au Mount Katahdin!

This was a great wedding that I recently shot for emile inc!  This venue is terrific and everyone that was part of the day made it great for Suzanne and Michael!

* Suzanne and Michael

venue: Beachmere Inn Ogunquit, Maine
officiant: Rabbi Judy Epstein
caterer: Kelly Gendron Kitchen Chicks Catering
florist: Kate Henderson Katherine’s Garden York, Maine
cake: Arie Kidder Custom Cakes
dj: Randy Barth
tent: Sperry Tents
hair: Lena Hartford Hair That Moves
dress: Vera Wang
invitations: Kate’s Paperie
honeymoon: South Africa
photographer: associate J

After dreaming of marrying at the Beachmere as a little girl on vacation in Ogunquit from New York City, Suzanne finally tied the knot to her longtime boyfriend Michael.

In Suzanne’s words, their story:
Mike and I met when we were 17-year-old freshman at NYU. He had a shaved head and an obsession with the Beatles. I was shocked to find out he was already a professional tap dancer who had worked with Gregory Hines and Savion Glover. I had hair down to my waist, pencil thin eyebrows and a nose ring and yet I think he figured out that I remained a suburban bookworm. We were friends for a year or so before we became a couple, officially, at 19. 10 years later and we’re getting married (finally!). We really have grown up together.

The Beachmere is a special place for me, too, as it is the location of the first wedding I ever photographed- my cousin Jeff- back in 2001. It has changed a lot since then, but the impressive ocean backdrop along the infamous Marginal Way remains a perfect setting for a wedding.

On to the photos…

Clouds gave way to a bit of sunshine in the afternoon, but fog later enveloped the grounds.

Suzanne getting ready. Love her dress and gorgeous smile.

The handsome groom, Michael.

What a wonderful happy recessional up the lawn.

First dance.

Suzanne is very tight with her mom, Joanne.

The fog rolls in.

Recently Maine made the jump to allow gay weddings!  You really couldn’t find a more beautiful state to have a marriage in…from Ogunquit to Bar Harbor the coast is amazing! The lakes region from Sebago to Moosehead allows for everything, more campy weddings to a very sophisticated ones.

The Ogunquit Inn is a unique Bed & Breakfast on Maine’s Southern coast. They offer quaint accommodations in a truly historical site. The home dates back to the 1800′s and it served as Ogunquit’s first schoolhouse.

Outside Magazine’s Annual Travel Edition named Blair Hill Inn as one of North America’s Top 5 most visually stunning wedding locations. Stripped of packaged pretense and brimming with relaxed sophistication, weddings atop Blair Hill are simply beautiful. The endless sky sweeping above the crystal blue lake provides a backdrop that is second to none. Together with the inn’s hallmark warm & anticipatory service, award winning dining, and simply equisite decor, Blair Hill Inn is the place wedding dreams come true.

Friend Frank DiMeo, from New York, and I photographed a 2-day Indian wedding at a private residence in Lancaster, New Hampshire.  This was last year and recently The Wedding Bee Pro featured it on their blog!  Em is a contributor and it was nice to see this wedding featured.  It was terrific to shoot it with Frank and just to be around the guy…

This was one of my favorite weddings of the year and not just because it was in Jamaica…ok well maybe that did have something to do with it.  The B&G, Lauren and Jamey, were just great and it was fun to spend a few days around the guests of the wedding before actually shooting it!

These days, photojournalism is a very popular style of wedding photography and it can be confusing to inquiring brides and grooms to know who is legit and who is imitating the professionals. News Wedding Photographers is a directory of wedding photographers who have a background in news photography. This directory will be a great resource for brides who are looking for true photojournalists, unfortunately that does not include me but certainly a ton of other talent out there.

If you have a background in the editorial world and moonlight on the weekends as a wedding photographer, you should list yourself on this directly.

Freaky Wedding Cake

This has to be one of the strangest wedding cakes out there…a bride had a cake replica of herself! This was an I-Report on CNN, so there was not a photographer to credit on it.

If this freaky wedding cake is not your style you should certainly check out Gayle Forte at Let Them Eat Cake.

Let her know that J from emilie inc sent you!
